Refugee Sponsorship

joy, joan karen refugee sponsors

Our parish sponsored a family of four from Iraq who arrived June 1st, 2015.  Mohanad, Heba, 10 year old Yousef, and 6 year old Hussain are loving Canada.  All of them are doing well in their studies.  They are adjusting to our rather tame winter this year.  The exciting  news is that Heba is expecting a baby girl on June 1st, the anniversary of the date that they arrived in Canada.

The Karen refugee family we were waiting for has decided that they no longer wish to resettle in Canada now that there is hope of returning to their own country under a new political reality.  Council and Corporation have agreed to sponsor an Iraqi-Palestinian refugee family.

This is a family-linked sponsorship.  Thikra is an Iraqi-Palestinian refugee woman, who along with her children, resettled in Ottawa three years ago.  Thikra would like to sponsor her sister, brother-in-law, and their 5 children, who have fled from the Middle East and have ended up in an Indonesian refugee camp, where there is no education for the children.  Thikra and I were referred to a lawyer at the University of Ottawa Refugee Sponsorship Support Project and they have just completed the case.  Because this family is in Indonesia, this will probably be a long-term application.  Hopefully, they will be arriving when the wave of Syrian refugee sponsorships wraps up.

If you would like more information or are interested in volunteering to help settle our family, please call Joan Bowler at (613) 692 – 2900.

Tax receipts for 2016 donations will be mailed out in early 2017.
