September 2016

From Fr. Ross…

This past Sunday Reverend Andrea spoke a simple, yet profound, truth in her sermon.

First, she challenged us to rethink the concept that God is out ‘looking’ for us as though the divine has lost us – somehow misplaced us – or as though we have somehow put ourselves beyond where God can go. (That particular view can lead us to think that there are times when we are completely abandoned by God.) Then she reminded us that God is always there, waiting: we have never been misplaced by the one who called us into being; we are always being welcomed into a new experience of that life-giving presence.

And this God is not in the business of creating religious obstacle courses so that we can prove our worthiness. On the contrary, the ways to God are especially designed to call us into the divine presence. Christianity is one of the ways ‘for God to get at us’.

This fall, may we see our faith journey not as an obstacle course on the way to salvation but as life in the presence of God. In that way, all of our experiences are holy because they all include the divine, and they all include us.
