On Saturday May 28, 2016 our own Nigel Shaw – now Col. the Right Reverend Nigel Shaw – was ordained in Christ Church Cathedral as a bishop, and consecrated as Bishop Ordinary of the Anglican Military Ordinariate. About a dozen Saint James parishioners were present for the laying on of hands by some eight other bishops, including Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of Canada. Armed Forces chaplains and other members of the Forces attended, as well as many of Nigel’s friends and associates. Following the ceremony we gathered for a reception to chat and to congratulate the new bishop.
The Anglican military ordinariate of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is an ecclesiastical jurisdiction (equivalent to a diocese) responsible for the pastoral care of Anglicans serving in the CAF. The Bishop Ordinary is therefore the bishop overseeing all Anglican chaplains in the Canadian military.
As Bishop Ordinary, Nigel will be responsible for supporting Anglican chaplains in their ministry to the Armed Forces and the recruitment of new chaplains. He will also deal with governance issues pertaining to the Ordinariate, and serve in the House of Bishops and on the Interfaith Committee on Canadian Military Chaplaincy.
