February 2016

St. James Anglican Church
February 2016

From Fr. Ross…

This month I write to you on behalf of Corporation as we report on the results of our new approach to budgeting for the parish.

You will remember that late last fall we embarked on an ‘Intentions Initiative’, asking each household to prayerfully consider what their financial support for the parish would be for 2016, and then to fill in a form giving us that information.

Based on that information, we estimated that regular givers will be able to contribute $265,981. Adding in other sources of revenue based on past experience, the total working income for preparing the 2016 operating budget was $310,971.

To fulfill our commitment to the parish to create a budget that matched our financial resources we needed to find approximately $30,000 in either operating budget savings or new revenue.  Attached you will find a document which gives you an idea of how Corporation did that: the first page is a summary of the budget lines we work with showing the ‘before’ and ‘after’ scenarios. Pages 2 and 3 are notes about specific lines indicating where we saved money, and where we looked for additional income for this year to make the budget balance.

Some savings come from more closely matching the budget line with what was actually spent in 2015. Some savings relate to belt tightening in areas that may have limited impact (see notes # 3, 4, 13, 14). Some savings/income are the result of significant realignment to better reflect our reality (see notes # 7, 18, 21, 22, 23, 24).

We thank you for your continued, generous support of the work of St James parish. If you have any questions about this information, please speak to one of the wardens before Vestry.

Ross or Janet Shaw
