The edge can be an unnerving place; neither here nor there; almost but not quite.
During this time of the Church year, we are on edge – called to seriously think about the nature of brokenness and hurt in ourselves and our world; drawn to view the sacrifice of Jesus by crucifixion and to make sense of that act in our own context; startled by the impossible re-appearance of a resurrected Messiah with a mix of fear, skepticism and delight.
Who can blame us if we prefer to focus on emerging flowers and fertility rites characterized by fluffy chickens and chocolate eggs?
And yet … the edge is where the energy is, partly fueled by our discomfort and driven by the need to move on from where we are.
As we finish our Lenten reflections; as we rehearse the Holy Week stories of adulation, community, betrayal, suffering and despair; and as we celebrate the surprises of new life emerging out of death, let us remember that in all of those parts of our lives, God is present.
The good news of the cross is that God does not shy away from being present in the grimmest part of our reality. The good news of the resurrection is that death does not define us, that we are transformed by the loving power of God, against which even death cannot win.
As St Paul said to the Christians in Rome, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)
