Dear friends…thank you so much for your warm welcome on my first Sunday at St James. I had such a wonderful time meeting new folks and renewing old friendships. I look forward to being in ministry with you; together as Christ’s hands, feet and heart to our world.

Now that I have gotten my feet wet, you might be wondering what I am going to be doing in my role as Associate Priest.

I will be working with people in both happy and sad situations. Along with program development, I am also available for spiritual direction, and I have had extensive training in companioning the bereaved whether through death, divorce, job loss etc. If you have a worry I have a listening ear and sacramental tools. Along with Father Ross, I will be leading worship and preaching.

In the beginning you may find it a bit confusing; who do I talk to, Ross or Andrea. Please don’t hesitate to approach either one of us. We will respond to your need or point you to the “other priest”.

My work hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. I will be in the office 9 to noon Wednesday or by appointment other times. If you call the church office for a pastoral emergency you will be directed to call my cell phone. Ross and I would like to be there to support you, either in body or in prayer so please call.

I am delighted to have been called to work with you at St James, and I pray our ministry together will be fruitful,

Sat. May 25 – Time & Talent Auction 7 pm

Join us for a fun-filled evening in Tomkins Hall as Frank Sisson auctions off a variety of interesting donations made by parishioners.  Examples from previous years include: baby-sitting, gardening, legal services (wills), hosting a dinner, computer help. If you wish to donate a talent or some time please contact Tim Venus or Darwin Turner.  Catalogues will be for sale at the door to Tomkins Hall.

Fri. May 31 – Dickinson Day Parade 7pm
Starts at Manotick Arena at 7:00 PM. Please come and join the F.A.I.T.H. youth group on the St James float. Everyone is welcome!

Sat. June 1 – Doors Open Ottawa 10 am – 4 pm
Sun. June 2 – Doors Open Ottawa 12 – 4 pm

Fri. June 7 – St. James “Foreth”Annual Golf Tournament
The Men’s Group invites EVERYBODY (including family & friends) to this year’s golf tournament at Manderly on the Green. 25% of all proceeds will go to St. James!!! Green fees $40 and buffet dinner is $22.  Join us for golf, dinner or both!  Sign-up sheet at back of the church. Contact Geoff Macmillan for more information.

Sat. June 8 – Silent Auction for Karen Sponsorship
Anytime between 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Come and bid on your favourite items! Highest bidder wins! You may take the item home that evening, or you will be phoned if you have won the item, and we can make arrangements for pick-up. Items include: certificates for restaurants, pizza & gourmet hamburgers, rounds of golf, complete set of husband/wife wills & Powers of Attorney, Paul’s Boat Line River Cruise, gift baskets, original art work, crock-pots, inflatable giant swan & many more great prizes.

Sun. June 9 – Church Picnic
Rain or shine after the 10:00 AM service. Everyone is welcome. Sign-up sheets will be in the Narthex and in Tomkins Hall. Please indicate how many will be attending, number of hotdogs or hamburgers and if you will be bringing a salad or a dessert. Any donations to offset the cost of the BBQ food will be greatly appreciated. Gluten free and or vegan option if requested. There will be organized games for the young and the young at heart.

Gifts to the Community….

“Open Mike” event

Those folks who went to the “Open Mike” evening at the Mill Tavern on the last Saturday of April really enjoyed themselves. Our very own talented musicians (Julie Townsend, Sandy and Tim Stanutz) played and sang folk, jazz and pop. A lively evening and a great time! Freewill offering for the Manotick Karen Refugee Sponsorship Program brought in $297.  Keep an eye on our thermometer in our church hall as the donations roll in!

About 15 people attended a very informative presentation on Suicide Alertness training on Saturday, April 27th. Many thanks to Fr. Rob Heard who lead the presentation.

St. James Garage Sale

Garage sale 

 To date over $1800 was raised at the St. James Garage Sale.  A huge thank you goes out to all who contributed by donating items, setting up, selling, packing up, transporting and of course to those who purchased so many “treasures”!

Opportunities to Give… 
Bottle Drive
The F.A.I.T.H. youth group are participating in a bottle drive for the month of May. Please bring your empty bottles to the church and leave them between the doors in Tomkins Hall.
Time & Talent Auction
If you have a talent or some time to offer your fellow parishioners, why not consider submitting a short description as to what you have to offer, your name, email address or telephone number and the estimated auction price to Tim Venus or to Darwin Turner. Please submit your offer no later than Sunday, May 19th.
Doors Open
Please consider volunteering for a Doors Open shift on Saturday June 1 or Sunday June 2. Contact Donna Rourke for more information.

Sundae Bar
The F.A.I.T.H. Youth group will be organizing a “make your own sundae bar” as a fundraiser for CLAY 2014!  This will be a free will offering.  CLAY 2014 is happening in Kamloops BC August 14-17, 2014.  Please help the youth of this parish get to Kamloops BC!

Silent Auction
Help required with the Silent Auction set-up on Friday afternoon, June 7th, and/or working a shift at the Silent Auction on Saturday, June 8th. Please contact Joan Bowler, Janet Shaw or Joy Clarke.  Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The stores may no longer be taking your pennies but the F.AI.T.H. Youth group will. There is a large carboy in the Narthex for you to put your pennies in.

Manotick Karen Refugee Sponsorship Program
Our parish has agreed to sponsor a Karen refugee family from Burma, currently living in a refugee camp in Thailand. Once the family arrives in Ottawa (about 19 months from now) we will be responsible for housing and support for one year. If you wish to support this project financially or as a member of the support team, please contact Joan Bowler (613-692-2900). So far with the support from the parish and the broader Manotick community we have raised $4,000 towards a goal of $30,000. For information check our website.

Volunteer Representative on DSHMI
If you are interested in staying up to date on the City of Ottawa’s development plans for the Dickinson Square and vicinity, why not join the Dickinson Square Heritage Management Inc. (DSHMI)  as a representative for St. James? We have the opportunity to send a representative and an alternate to join the membership. Past reps have usually been Manotick residents and have updated Corporation from time to time as appropriate. Their 2013 Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013, from 2 – 4 p.m. in the church hall at Knox Presbyterian Church on Dickinson Square.  This is the Dickinson Days weekend, but what better time or place for us to focus on the important role that the Square plays in our Village’s cultural and heritage activities?    For more specific details about what is involved contact: the DSHMI Chair, Margot Belanger.

What is Happening with our Ministry with Children and Families?

Since last month’s announcement about
re-visioning our work with families, several people have asked me

if this means we

are not going to focus

so much on families

with children, and will now be focussing

more on seniors

Our commitment

to families

with children

remains strong.

More ministry for

seniors does not

mean less ministry

for families with children. That’s one of the reasons Rev. Andrea has joined our team here at St James

– so we have staff resources to do more than we did before.

She and I will be

working with parish families to figure out

how to best meet their spiritual development needs, building on

the programs

 already in place.
