Last Night of the Proms

On Sunday October 14, Saint Matthias’ Church was host to that splendid British rave, The Last Night of the Proms.  Our group from Saint James’ maintained its tradition of having the largest number from any parish in the Diocese and, of course, the most enthusiastic.  The proceedings started off with a roast beef dinner in the church hall, done up with flags and decorations to be the Axeman pub.  Garth Hampson was Master of Ceremonies, conduction a rousing  singalong as we consumed our meal.

After dinner we repaired to the nave of the church for the main event, with band and choir.  The first half of the program featured traditional music such as Zadok the Priest and The Old Hundredth. The second half saw the arrival of Britannia, with the singing of Britannia Rules the Waves.  Needles to say, the audience joined in with gusto and with much flag waving.  By the time we reached Land of Hope and Glory, pandemonium reigned.  In short, a good night was had by all.
