A Few Words from Fr. Ross…

Sunday, February 27th is our Annual Vestry Meeting.  Roughly translated, that means that after the 10 a.m. worship service on that day we will conduct the ‘annual general meeting’ for this parish. I hope that you will join us for that meeting.

We will receive reports which reflect the work of the parish over this past year, do those things necessary to continue on as a legal entity in this year – approve a budget and elect/appoint officers – and think about how we might focus our energies for the coming year.

Even in churchland all is not music and prayers and candles. A vibrant parish like St James’ pays attention to practical details as well as worship and spiritual development for both children and adults.

One practical detail relates to spiritual development for adults. I am interested in finding out how we can best support adults in their spiritual growth.  One way is through dynamic worship; other avenues include opportunities to study and share together, and to learn and practice various patterns for prayer and reflection.

We are coming to a season of the year which especially lends itself to a renewed focus on reflection and spiritual growth – Lent.

In preparation for that we are distributing a quick survey with the service bulletins the next two Sundays.  Please fill these in and place them in the large brown envelopes attached to bulletin boards in the narthex, in Tomkins Hall and outside the office. Basically, it will be helpful for planning to know:

· If there is interest in weekday Morning Prayer (and at what time) during Lent;

· The best time to schedule our Lenten Study which is focused on Marcus Borg’s book, “The Heart of Christianity”;

· How many of our St James family will be planning to participate in the ecumenical Lenten services, hosted this year at the Manotick United Church.

May we continue to know the enriching presence of God’s Holy Spirit leading us to a deeper understanding of our Christian faith.

Gifts to the Community…

Congratulations go out to the F.A.I.T.H.* Youth Group for raising $1,600 for Centre 454 at the Valentine’s Spaghetti Lunch held on Sunday, February 13th.  The girls did a great job advertising, setting up, cooking, decorating, serving and cleaning up.  Many thanks go to all who participated and contributed to this very successful event!

(*Friendship, Acceptance, Inspiration, Trust, Hope)

Spearheaded by the Men’s Group and Anglican Church Women (ACW), our parish is participating in Cornerstone’s “Adopt-A-Room” program.  Cornerstone, which provides emergency shelter and supportive housing for homeless women, has opened a new women’s residence with 42 units.  Each unit in the residence requires a donor to raise $5,500 by the end of 2012, with funds dedicated to purchasing items such as furnishings, appliances, linens and paint.  St. James is excited to be participating in this worthwhile project, but needs your help.  Stay tuned for future fundraising details!

Opportunities to Give…
Noahs Ark Float
Dickinson Day Parade
We are looking for a truck that can pull the float for the parade on Friday, June 4th.  If you are able to help out, please contact Chrisann at 613-692-2082 or by email at stjamesyouth@sympatico.ca.

Building and Maintenance Committee

We are looking to form a committee to advise Corporation and Parish Council about up coming maintenance issues for the church.  If you are a tradesperson, engineer or in the construction business, we could really use your help.  We wish to identify work that needs to be done to keep our church in good repair and to enable us to financially plan for future projects. If you are interested in helping please leave your name with Sam at 613-692-2082.

Coffee/Tea Volunteers

We are always looking for people to serve coffee/tea/juice on Sundays after the 10 a.m. service.  The sign-up sheet is posted on the wall to the left of the kitchen serving area.  If you are new to the church and would like to know what is involved, please talk to Shirley Hilchuk at 613-823-6324.

Communications Co-ordinator

Do you have a computer and a way with words?  We are looking for someone who would be interested in putting together the monthly newsletter, liaising with the local press and passing information along to our website co-ordinator.  If you are interested, please contact Sam at 613-692-2082.
